Mindfulness with Children Making Calm Jars

Calm jars


You will need


A jar or plastic bottle

A jug of warm water

60ml glitter glue

3 drops of gel food colouring

60-80g of glitter

  1. Add warm water to your jar or bottle until it reaches a third of the way up

  2. Add glitter glue and stir until it combines with the water

  3. Add around 3 drops of the food colouring and stir. You can add more or less depending on your preferred shade but remember not too add too much or the mixture will be very dark and it will be hard to see the glitter.

  4. Pour in the glitter! Again you can use more or less than suggested, go for a mix of chunky and fine glitter to give texture ot your jar, stir well until combined with the existing mixture

  5. Top up your jar with the rest of the warm water until its almost full. Leave a little gap at the top of the jar to allow the mixture to move. Optional: If you like you can stick the jar or bottle lid on with glue to prevent spillages!

How to Use

  1. Shake the jar and watch the pretty glitter and colours move around, ask the children (depending on their age) what sort of things in life make the glitter swirl around. Explain that sometimes in life our minds can be like the glitter all over the place and it can be difficult to understand our emotions and feelings and they can feel a bit all over the place and it can be hard to see clearly.

  2. Sit still and watch the glitter settle – explain what happens when we sit still and we are calm how the glitter settles a bit like all the things going on in our minds and when we are waiting for the glitter to settle we can help by taking a few deep breaths, helping us see more clearly.

  3. Talk about the fact the glitter is there, we know its there and its settled but by keeping calm it helps us see more clearly.

  4. Use the calm jar as a timer whenever you need for taking some mindful deep breaths together.
